Behind The Lens

Location

This was during a well earned summer break to the Isle of Wight. The steam railway is one of many things to do, or not. A popular tourist attraction which was understandably busy.

Time

We stumbled across the railway and decided 'well why not, looks like a fun way to spend the afternoon". It was a nice hot summers day with the sun high in the sky. We took shelter on the steam train and sat in one of the 6 carefully restored carriages. We travelled for a mile or two in one direction. Then the engine spun around with ease and we headed back the way we came.

Lighting

As I mentioned the sun was high in the sky being as it was around lunchtime. This was shot with me leaning out of one of the windows and I happened to catch the gent as he tended to the engine.

Equipment

Shot with my first DSLR, a Canon 600D with 17-85 USM walkabout lens.

Inspiration

I wanted to capture the sense of size and scale and with me leaning out of the carriage is gave a great perspective.

Editing

Processed to look of an age when steam travel was common place. A sepia filter in Photoshop and then a vignette applied within Lightroom.

In my camera bag

On this occasion I only tool the camera with my usual lens attached. However, in the car I left behind a 50mm prime and my trusty 55-250 telephoto lens.

Feedback

Ideally and the only way really to capture something like this is to climb aboard the train. Not only do you get a nice trip back in time but a composition which is nigh on impossible if you don't!
