The rhino was inside its paddock but the sunlight was still getting in, helping to create the nice contrast with light and shadowEquipment
A Panasonic Lumix G1 and a 200mm zoom lens. Hand held.Inspiration
I had taken a head shot of a rhino previously and was the first black and white conversion I attempted. The result worked so well I couldnt wait to try and get more similar shots, trying to get as much of the texture in its hide as possible.Editing
Used a mixture of Lightroom software to convert to black and white and adjust levels (contrast, brightness, clarity, sharpness etc,). I then used Photoshop elements to remove the background, using the burn, paint and blur tools. In my camera bag
A camera body (currently Canon 100D), 75mm and 300mm zoom lenses, selection of filters, shutter release, extra battery and memory card and a monopod.Feedback
Take plenty of shots of animals. Pay particular attention to animals with good markings and skin textures. This, coupled with good light and deep shadows all come together to create a great shot that will come out as a stunning black and white image. Experiment with various tools within a photo post processing software, such as burn, dodge, blur and paint to get the result you require. It may be tricky at first but definately worth persevering with.
