It was quite a sunny day and wascreating a nice contrast of light and shadow of the chimpsEquipment
I had a Panasonic Lumix G1 camera with a 200mm zoom lens. No other equipment, just a hand held shot.Inspiration
It was a lovely scene with the mother looking after the baby, who looked my way as I was taking the shot, making it look quite shy.Editing
I cropped the image, converted it to black and white whilst enhancing the contrast which slightly deepened the shadows. I then used Serif Photoplus software to remove the background and blend the foreground, creating a vignette - making the photo look almost like viewing through a telescope. It was only after converting to black and white that it became apparent that the chimp was looking straight at me, the colours seemed to obscure this.In my camera bag
I now carry 1 camera body (Canon 100D), 2 zoom lenses (up to 75mm and 300mm), a selection of filters, a monopod and shutter release.Feedback
The sun plays a big part in shots like these, particularly winter sun which creates a good light and deep shadows in equal measure. Keep taking as many shots as you can and attempt to anticipate the action (easier said than done, I know). The shadows make it important when it comes to post processing as by increasing the contrast and tweaking the other levels can create a stunning effect and help merge the animals with the background. For this blending experiment using burn, blur and paint tools from any photo processing software (it doesnt have to be Photoshop)
