Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in my kitchen. Most of my apartment is carpeted and we needed a hard surface to splatter the blood onto, for both effect and the ability to clean after the shoot.

Time

This was captured late in the morning, roughly 11 AM.

Lighting

Most of the lighting was natural light pouring in from a window off to the left side of the subject. I had additional lights on both sides of me to give myself some shutter breathing room and dialed down the exposure manually.

Equipment

I shot this on a [Canon] T3i with a 35mm prime lens.

Inspiration

The model has a penchant for fabulous shoes (and boots) and a strong fondness of anatomical hearts, in addition to a playful exploration of sexuality. The idea was the combine all of these into a dominatrix-like capture in which the subject is literally dominating one's heart, which could be interpreted both figuratively and literally.

Editing

I did some minor edits in Adobe Lightroom, including desaturating any of the colors except for the heart. After exporting to Photoshop, I selected the best black and white filter in an adjustment layer in order to contrast the image a bit more. The last edit was to duplicate the layer, use overlay as a blending mode, and then add a layer mask to isolate the overlay blend on just the heart. This gave it a more gritty and realistic look.

In my camera bag

I roll with my camera and just one lens, usually the 35mm prime lens, an extra memory card or two, an extra battery, and a white balance card.

Feedback

Have a strong grasp of the image you're creating in your head ahead of time, but be flexible to make some alterations on the fly. It also helps to really be in tune with what you're expressing or the message you're aiming for as well has having a subject that shares the same love of what you're expressing, the team work element really shines in a situation like that and people feel it when they see the image.
