Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at my friend's apartment in sunny Queens, NY.

Time

When this picture was taken, we were just about approaching the golden hour of the afternoon/early evening.

Lighting

This is all natural light, we were shooting against a wall that was perpendicular to a wide-pane window and the sunlight was just pouring into the room.

Equipment

This was shot on a handheld T3i with a kit lens (18-55mm), it was my first time braving manual focus.

Inspiration

This shot was actually taken in the early days of me shooting (and I mean very early). My friend offered to model for me as I was self-teaching the ways of the camera.

Editing

I loaded this photo into Lightroom and utilized some skin softening and iris enhancing techniques.

In my camera bag

At that time I didn't even have a bag yet, funny now - I usually carry one zoom lens and one prime lens, one or two flashes, some color gels to put on the flashes, an extra battery, and finally an analog camera (either Polaroid or 35mm).

Feedback

The real trick to this shot was just having a lot of light. I was a pup when I took this shot and had it have been a darker setting I would have definitely came away with a blurry imagine or a super noisy image from having the ISO cranked all the way up. Invest in some lights, even a fairly cheap flash with a diffuser can make a huge difference.
