I took this photo at a Boxing training gym. The gloves were hanging from the the ceiling and the light and worn condition of the gloves attracted my attention. This images was posted on ViewBug in colour, however one of our members, devinjohnstonlee, remarked that he would like to see the image in B&W. He should get credit for the image.Time
I took this photo at night at approx 19H00. The Boxing academy was quite dark and i had to increase my ISO to 400 at f4 and 1/160. I think the conversion to monochrome changed the entire photo into a totally different image with much more impact. I am a great fan of monochrome images howevr this photo was taken more than 12 months ago and I seldom visit files that are this old. I have learnt a lesson in that one should always revisit old files there might be gems hidden in those files.Lighting
As mentioned Boxing training was at night. People come from wark and go to gym after hours. The lighting was bad. Neon lights were used and I was not allowed to use a flash. I therefore stood next to a wall to ceiling mirror that reflected light into the hall. Iso was set at 400 and f4 to get better DOF. Shutter speed was 1/160 and lens I used was Canon 50mm f1.8. I used to be a boxer in my youth and the gloves evoke memories of hard fought battles judging by the worn condition of the gloves.Equipment
Camera canon 7D lens was 50mm f1.8 no tripod or flash was allowed. I had to rely on the relative speed of the lens and also trying to get decent DOF as the gloves were hanging from the ceiling out of sight.Inspiration
The insiration to take this photo was the worn condition of the glove. I was waiting for the boxers to return from a training run. I had time to look around the gym and the gloves caught my attention.Editing
Post processing was simple. I cropped the photo slightly, increased the saturation, removed as much noise as possible and sharpened the image. I then converted the image to B&W in Photoshop. In my camera bag
My equipment is a Canon 7D with kit lens 18-135mm, a Sigma 70mm f2 macro lens, Sigma 10-20mm, Canon 100-400 L lens and a Canon 70-200mm L f4 lens with IS . I find this to be a fantastic lens, it is not as heavy as the f2.8 lens. Images are sharp and it is a fantastic lens to carry on the camera the whole day and last but not least 50mm f1.8Feedback
First of all I had to find an Boxing academy that would allow me to take photos and also permission to publish the photos should the need arise. One should investigate the circumstances, I went to the site 1 hour before the start of the training to check out the lighting and where I could stand, even though I could move around whereevr I wanted to. The light was not good and I stayed in one spot with the large mirrors behind me, reflecting extra light into the boxing arena. I knew the light would not be good and therefore I only took the one lens, 50mm f1.8 and my camera. No use carrying extra equipment that you won't use. My main advice is investigate the conditions and take only the equipment that you need.
