Location
I was riding in a hot air balloon at the BalloonFest in Statesville, NC. It was my first time in a hot air balloon. I wanted to photograph the hot air balloons, but I wanted a different perspective than most photographers get. So, I decided to see what I could get from inside one of the other balloons.Time
The balloons began to take off right after sunrise. We were moving directly into the rising sun.Lighting
It was early morning light, just after sunrise. The pictures I took with my back to the sun were in perfect light. However, to get this shot I was shooting directly into the rising sun. So, I was concerned that all of the balloons would just be black silhouettes if I wasn't careful.Equipment
This shot was taken with a Canon T5 and a Tamron 18-200mm lens. It was a hand held shot. No other equipment. The balloon basket was only large enough for me and the pilot. There was no room for any additional equipment.Inspiration
When I looked at the balloons flying in front of me, into the sun, I noticed that I could see the sun beams through the balloons. I also noticed the bit of fog. It seems so dreamy and serene. I was just hoping that I could capture the feeling in my picture.Editing
I did just a little post-processing on this picture. I did some highlight and shadow adjustments in Lightroom. It may have benefited from more, but I just really liked the way it looked out of the camera, so I didn't want to do too much to it.In my camera bag
I do a lot of different types of photography (since it is just a hobby for me, I shoot whatever catches my eye that day). So, I pack my bag based on my plans. If I am going to shoot wildlife, I will pack my Canon 6D and my Sigma 150-500mm and my Canon T5 with my Tamron 70-200mm (I do like to always carry two cameras, just in case). If I am doing landscapes or street photography, I normally pack my Canon 6D and my Tamron 24-70mm or my Canon 50mm. I always have filters, extra batteries, extra SD cards and maybe my external flash in the bag.Feedback
My advice for capturing a photo like this one is to remember that sometimes you have to put yourself in the right place to get the shot. I would have never been able to get this shot without being in one of the balloons.
