Behind The Lens

Location

I was hiking through a local nature center here in Sacramento, CA. There was a field that had a bunch of poppies blooming. I got down on on my knees to get closer.

Time

This photo was taken mid morning.

Lighting

Being in the right place at the right time and a little luck provided great lighting to enhance the flower.

Equipment

Nikon D300, 55-200 mm lens at f7, 1/200. Handheld because I was out for a casual hike. All natural lighting.

Inspiration

I photographed this poppy because it was so perfect.

Editing

A snall amount of post processing in Lightroom. Mainly cropping.

In my camera bag

I typically travel light because most of my photos are taken out on the trail. I currently use a Nikon D800. I often have just my Nikkor 28-300 zoom and that is it. My other favorite setup is the same camera with my Nikkor 70-200 lens. If I am really out just for photography, I also include my 12-14 wide angle lens and my 105mm micro lens.

Feedback

To capture a similar image, be outside and pay attention. This patch of poppies was slightly off the trail, but you could see them because of their color. While the "magic" hours produce dramatic lighting, don't cheat yourself out of photo opportunities during the rest of the day. And always enjoy being in nature.
