Behind The Lens
Location
Niagara Falls, Canadian side. We had actually gone to the butterfly emporium and bird kingdom. When we finished visiting those places I noticed the sky and just had to drive to the falls to capture it.Time
It was taken at approximately 3pm on a very stormy day.Lighting
Lightening is hit or miss, and on this day I was doing some HDR photography. I actually didn't realize I had a lightening shot until I got home and processed them. This was the only shot I got of lightening.Equipment
Canon Rebel T1i with 18-200. I didn't use a tripod as the weather was bad and didn't have very much time to grab a few shots of this amazing sight.Inspiration
The weather inspired me to take the shot. The clouds were amazing, and the lightening was streaking through the sky. I love clouds, but I especially love it when they are angry looking. And what better backdrop for this shot than Niagara Falls.Editing
Yes I processed in Photomatics and final crop in photoshop. In my camera bag
I now have a Canon 7D, and still use my 18-200 most of the time. It has become my go to lens that I use in all different photography applications. I always carry my external flash as well, because you never know when you might need to use it in low light or shade for fill light. Most important is a couple of extra batteries and also extra SD cards. I usually don't carry too many different lenses with me unless I am going after something specific and multiple lenses are needed.Feedback
I am the type of person who seldom goes anywhere without my camera. You just never know when an amazing opportunity will come your way. Don't be afraid to go after that shot (well within reason and please be safe at all times). Sometimes people have a vision of a particular shot, and get there but the shot they had envisioned is not there, take the shot anyway, walk around, look at things from all angles, don't give up and walk away. Sometimes you have to wait for the light to be positioned right, so don't be in a hurry. I have learned that patience is definitely a virtue when it comes to photography, and I have watched too many people walk away too soon from taking a sunset, and totally missed the after glow.
