Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Boudhanath Stupa in Kathmandu Nepal.

Time

I was staying at a guesthouse in the Thamel part of Kathmandu when I decided to go check out my surroundings. I hopped in a tuk tuk and asked to go to Boudhanath. It took a fair amount of time consideringg the road conditions and traffic but i eventually got there about 4 pm in the afternoon. It was a cloudy day and the sun started to dip down which made for some awesome light

Lighting

I wanted the light to be diffused by the prayer flags so that you could actually still see the details of the structure and flags that adorned the stupa

Equipment

I took this photo with my Canon 60D and I believe the nifty 50mm hand held. I was actually shooting a video sequence when I decided to flip the switch and take a still image.

Inspiration

When I arrived in Nepal I had an overwhelming sense of spirituality a connection to the universe that remains unexplainable. At this stupa you are supposed to walk around the entire base spinning prayer wheels and reciting a prayer for yourself or a loved one. As I walked around I felt this spiritual connection and tried to capture that feeling of oneness and awe that I felt that day. Shen I loo at this photo I still get that feeling and it gives me goosebumps.

Editing

For this photo I bracketed 3 different exposures to get the detail in the shadows and tried not to blow out the highlights around the sun.

In my camera bag

Since I have done a fair amount of traveling I ditched my 60D in favour of the Canon 6D with GPS so I know where I have taken my shots and full frame. I have a 50mm 1.8 and my kit 24-105mm f4L and 100mm 2.8L I don't use flash a lot while traveling but I wouldn't be got dead without my lens pen and rapid strap.

Feedback

Any advice I would have is when your walking around with or without your camera just take some time and look around, things may capture your eye that normally you wouldn't have seen or walk around change perspective of the everyday way of looking at things crouch, bend, look up, turn there is beauty all around you just have to find it.
