Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken a few blocks from Tryon Palace and the birth place of Pepsi-Cola in the historic area of New Bern, NC.

Time

It was late afternoon, early evening. The light was indirect as the sun had gone behind surrounding buildings, just enough to light the subject. I had to open the aperture and slow the shutter, just enough to not catch movement.

Lighting

The lighting was all natural, I took a few test shots to ensure I had my camera settings set how I wanted before staging the subject as she is.

Equipment

I used a Nikon D7000 and a small step ladder to raise myself a little higher than normal. Not much was needed as I'm 6'2" already.

Inspiration

This was a "Pre-Prom" photoshoot. The young couple wanted some photos taken prior to the dance. I wanted to capture an elegant shot of her from above.

Editing

I try not to over-do-it in post. Normally, I'll convert digital color to B&W in post, minor adjustments to exposure, remove unwanted blemishes (not needed for this photo), and crop to the desired size. For this particular photo, I added a slight vignette to reduce the background and make the subject stand out a little more.

In my camera bag

My bag is a plain canvas shoulder bag which houses my camera (Nikon D7000), lenses, and flash.

Feedback

This photo was part satisfaction for the client and a larger part satisfaction for me and my artistic expression. Don't be afraid to express yourself through your photos while also listening to your client's wishes/vision for their photos.
