Location
This shot was taken mid-December, just before the winter solstice began. Winter sunrises are my favorites!! I was up for sunrise, standing in one of my favorite sunrise spots, over the bay side of the island. It was pretty cloudy, but they were moving quickly and a few minutes before the sun started to rise, the hues and colors and shapes were just fabulous...and the reflection made it so much better!Time
Probably around 6:45-7. Pre-sunrise but not the dawn light.Lighting
The clouds play such a role in your outdoor lighting. Learn to work with them, instead of against them. The more clouds, the more it saturates the colors you're seeing.Equipment
Camera: Canon EOS REBEL T1i Aperture: f/16.0 ISO: 800 Shutter Speed: 1/125 This is a pretty typical style that I use... I try to use the smallest aperture possible when shooting sunrises.Inspiration
I love winter sunrises so much! And I was hoping we may get one before the seasons officially changed... and we did! The soft colors and the movement plus reflections just make it so much better!Editing
I am actually not much for editing. My enjoyment is in the taking of the photos, not editing, so I change as much in camera as possible. In this photo I probably added some sharpness, contrast and added in more black point. I know there are so many great edits out there--but I just haven't felt the call to learn that aspect yet. I'm considering upgrading my lightroom though! In my camera bag
Well, I actually need a new bag and have been looking around... Backpack is preferable, with side entry. I use the Manfrotto BeFree tripod, it is fabulous, and an intervalometer remote for the long exposures. I also have my Canon 6D, 70-200mm f/4, 11-16mm, 24-105mm f/4, and a prime lens 85mm f/1.8.Feedback
The best sunrises are when there are clouds present. 30 minutes prior to sunrise, the colors are deep. Same with sunset. Plan ahead, look at the weather, and read the long exposure manual before you get there!
