Behind The Lens

Location

This image was taken at the Glasgow World Cup 2014 (gymnastics) competition held at the Emirates Arena, Glasgow, Scotland, UK

Time

The competition ran from 1.00pm to 4.00pm on a rainy and wet Saturday afternoon... luckily we were warm inside.

Lighting

No flash is allowed at gymnastics competitions in case it distracts the gymnast mid move in mid air... so we are reliant on the halls lighting. Luckily this competition was being filmed by the BBC so they had a few extra lights and backgrounds staged.

Equipment

Canon 5d mk3 with a rented sigma 120-300mm sports lens - all sitting on monopod with lens master gamble head. The lens was heavy at 7kgs so some form of support is required.

Inspiration

Being Scottish Gymnastics official photographer, I was there to cover the Scottish Gymnasts,(although they were competing for GB) .

Editing

Not a lot to do, processing wise, a bit of noise reduction in Lightroom and a crop or 2 is all we are allowed to do.

In my camera bag

Depends on the assignment, but for gymnastics events its the Canon 5d mk 3 and a 6d (back up) - both deal with noise really well in the low light situations. , Zooms - 70-200mm, 1.4 extender, 24-70mm lens, Prime 100mm macro lens. Memory cards, spare batteries, cleaners.

Feedback

Practice practice and practice.. .. its essential to know the sport you are photographing so you can anticipate the moves, action and capture it at the right moment.. Some will hit the high speed shutter and spray and pray on getting a good pic, this can be minimised if you know when the action will happen.. Getting used to the low light situations is essential too, pre-focussing if you have to,as you don't want the lens hunting at that critical moment. and did i say practice :)
