I took this photo in my backyard in Newbury Park, California. I like challenging myself to shoot locally.Time
This photo was taken at about 1:30PM in late May in the afternoon. I remember laying on the ground focusing on my dog's nose when all of a sudden she opened her mouth. I knew I had a really unique photo.Lighting
My backyard has a decent amount of shade in the afternoon so the harsh light was reduced a bit which softened up the light on her face.Equipment
This was made with a Canon 7D using a 100mm macro lens. I used a wide aperture and a fast shutter speed to separate her from the background. I took the photo handheld in order to get low enough to capture the angle I wanted.Inspiration
I really enjoy the small aspects that macro photography entails and I was fascinated by the detail in my dog's face. I wanted to get level with her face in order to capture the best perspective. I got lucky that she opened her mouth to lick her nose!Editing
I applied some basic editing in Adobe Lightroom, increased the sharpness, and added a small vignette. In my camera bag
In my camera bag, I typically have a Canon 7D with a 16-35mm lens, a 24-70mm lens, and a 70-200mm lens. When I'm doing macro photography I almost always use my 100mm lens with a tripod unless I need to shoot from a position that the tripod won't allow me to.Feedback
Make sure to shoot on an even level with your subject because it creates a more personal photo. Also, stay patient until you get the shot. It took a bit of time (and luck!) for her to open her mouth so be patient and remember it's supposed to be fun.
