Location
This photo was taken in the wilderness area of Silverthorne Colorado, while hunting for grasshoppers.Time
One of my favorite images from the day. It was taken around 1 in the afternoon, the sun was high and not a cloud in the sky.Lighting
I had my assistant (the little girls mom) hold a scrim above to diffuse the harsh sunlight, as to avoid and minimize blown out high lights. I also added fill flash with a diffusing umbrella to bring out her beautiful eyes a bit.Equipment
This was shot with a Canon 6D, equipped with an 85mm lens, at f/2.5 Yongnuo flash off cameraInspiration
I was inspired for the location, by the changing of the seasons. The beginning of autumn is one my favorite times, I love the warm tones that are found in nature, and how they react when sunlit. I was inspired to take this particular shot as she had taken a brief moment from searching the ground for grasshoppers, to look up at me. When photographing I prefer to not pose people, rather let them be themselves. I feel this creates a natural look.Editing
Even using the scrim, I felt the highlights in her dress were a little too hot. I compensated for this in light room, as well as adding some vignetting, and shifting the color tones in the shadows. In my camera bag
I carry my Canon 7D, and 6D. I always have my Canon 85mm prime (my favorite at the moment). Additionally, I always have a few other lenses for different situations. Like my 70-200mm, 50mm prime, and my 10-22mm (another favorite). Also in the bag are a bunch of Yongnuo flashes, triggers, diffusers and bubble gum!Feedback
When you have an adorable, outgoing subject, such as this little girl it makes for an easy shot. It’s hard for some to relax in front of the camera. I find if your subject has something to do, or you create an interesting topic of conversation, it it brings a more comfortable feeling to the shoot. Let your subjects be themselves (no posing) and capture the moments that their personality shows through to you.
