Behind The Lens

Location

This shot was taken in the far north of Scotland at the latter end of October 2013. The rainbow was already there, but I didn't see it until I 'developed' the photograph.

Time

It was taken about 3 p. m..The sun was on the way down. It had been overcast and rainy most of the day. Then as we were returning to our holiday home the sun broke through and a patch of blue sky opened up

Lighting

The shot was taken in natural light, a polariser was fitted as on most days.

Equipment

My equipment for this shot was a Canon 50D, tripod mount, a flash would have been lost in the landscape, under exposed by 1/4 of a stop as most of my landscape shots are. Shot in raw, manual exposure, f16, centre focusing, shutter lockup, 10 second timer shutter triggered.

Inspiration

I'm always on the look out for good shots. I never plan anything, I just travel around and if I like something I stop and 'shoot' it. Of course, you can't go wrong in Scotland, or Wales. I tend to stay on home soil these days.

Editing

I very rarely shoot in Jpeg, always raw and so I use photoshop CS6, with the raw plugin. I don't own Lightroom, so I have never used it. I generally leave exposure alone when processing, I don't use the highlight or low light indicators, I use my own judgement and experiment with the rest of the sliders until I have what I like. I very seldom use layers and always check sharpness last.

In my camera bag

Canon 50D body, 17-85 kit lens This was shot with that lens. 75-200 zoom lens, though not used often. Spare battery, lens spray and glass wipes. UV and polariser filters for both lenses and a set of Cokin lenses which I don't use often, preferring the polariser and post processing. I also have a 5D full frame body, a 150-500 Sigma 'bird' lens, but I find it heavy when following a moving subject ( a tripod mount is just not versatile enough).

Feedback

The time of day is critical for the shot you require, when shooting landscapes. I was just lucky with this shot. I have a tendency to take lots of exposures of different subjects and 'scapes', then sort out the good from the not so good later. I like to shoot in manual, rather than AV, or TV (Canon). I only use TV for moving wild life shots. Rain or storm doesn't bother me unless it is too stormy, then it can be dangerous.
