Behind The Lens

Location

This picture was taken at Thatcham Nature Reserve near Newbury. My partner and I decided that it would be a great place to practice wildlife photography, we enjoyed it so much we stayed until sundown.

Time

Having spent the best part of the afternoon taking images of the local bird life, trying to capture that special shot. The evening sky started to turn almost gold with the sunset, We were just seated enjoying the peace and the evening bird songs, the lake started to turn amber and gold, the silhouetted tree then presented itself as the perfect balance to the foreground.

Lighting

One of the most fascinating things I have learned as an amature photographer is make the most of the unexpected. We went out for the afternoon to photograph wild life and ended up capturing reflections.

Equipment

I used a Canon 600D with Canon 70-200mm L Lens fitted with a Polariser

Inspiration

To be honest if the afternoon hadn't been so pleasant we would have probably left the reserve sooner, and the shot wouldn't have happened. I couldn't resist the sillhouettes of the branches in the foreground as they grew darker against the reflected amber.

Editing

The only post processing carried out was to tweek the contrast very slightly to enhance the sillhouettes effect.

In my camera bag

I try not to carry huge amounts of kit when out and about, I think photography should be enjoyed in its entirety, I generally decide what lens before going out, One of my favourite pieces of kit is my Tamron Macro Lens, My passion is macro photography, I really enjoy the surprises and challenges that the macro world brings. If there's a bug... I'm there.

Feedback

Sometimes these type of shot just present themselves and to a point you need to be ready, for example a tripod or any stable camera support is an advantage but can be a bit cumbersome to carry around. I tend to carry a beanbag and a remote control for the camera (Both small and lightweight) If you intend to take this type of shot from to outset then patience is a must, the weather, natural light and shadows etc can completely change the mood of the picture. The most important thing is to have fun.....
