Behind The Lens

Location

This photograph was taken in the outer hebrides in Scotland. I was 12 at the time (three years ago) and it was my first time being in Scotland and seeing Puffins.

Time

The boat arrived on the island around 9 o'clock in the morning, this gave us a couple of hours to explore and find seabirds. Little did I know, these beautiful birds would be everywhere.

Lighting

The light was overcast, typically Scottish, however this took away the harsh shadows and filled the scene with soft light. I was hoping for the sun to be beaming down but found that soft light was more favourable in catching all the details of these magnificent birds.

Equipment

This particular photograph was shot only with a Nikon D7000 with a Sigma 100-300mm f/4.5-6.7.

Inspiration

I had spent about an hour on the island with the puffins and had photographed only portraits of single birds in the frame. Puffins usually mate with the same individual each year, so I wanted to capture a pair together, in their natural habitat of course. This resulted in a much more interesting image and one of my favourites as a result of seeing these birds.

Editing

There was no post processing done on this image, at the time I was only starting to understand photography and had no idea about editing techniques.

In my camera bag

I usually carry around a Nikon D7000 in my bag, I have been using it for years now and it has never failed me. This camera has allowed me to evolve as a photographer and be constantly improving my shots and ideas, I will most likely upgrade in the near future but cannot recommend it enough for beginner photographers. Also in my bag is a Sigma 150-500mm lens, this albeit big lens, is great for photographing wildlife; especially great for seabirds such as Puffins.

Feedback

My advice would be to always be aware of your surroundings, not only is it key for finding and photographing wildlife but for your own safety. Photographing Puffins is an awesome experience, however, know the dangers of your environment, work with it and you will be rewarded greatly.
