Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken near my home. Our town has a lot of nature trails. These are undeveloped tracts of land and the paths and it's forested areas are used by the locals to hike and bike and just to be surrounded by nature.

Time

This was taken late afternoon. I like to just get out of the house and go for long walks. It was raining on and off most of the day and everything was still wet. and as always, bring my camera with me. Some days I shoot nothing. But on this day everything was so intense in colour from the rain.

Lighting

overcast day, just stopped raining, and light was even everywhere. No dark or light areas to worry about.

Equipment

This was shot with a Nikon D80. I had just purchased my Nikkor 105mm macro and was happy to be out with this lens. Hand held.

Inspiration

I loved the look of the rain drops on the blades of grass.

Editing

I use Lightroom for my post processing work. For this photo, I did a little tighter crop, and increased the contrast slightly to darken the background a bit.

In my camera bag

I have, since this shot was taken, upgraded the camera to a Nikon D7100. I try to travel light, camera, choice of lens for the day, Between my 35mm, 18-200mm zoom, 17-55mm f1.8 zoom or my 105mm macro. But always with a polarizing filter, A variable ND filter and a cable release. If early in the day or late, a MeFoto tripod. Camera is always on a Rapid-R strap.Plus the regular assortment of cleaning equipment, and a plastic bag as rain gear for my camera.

Feedback

Just get out there. Always look for interesting shots. They are there, you just have to find them. When you see something of interest, if you can, walk around your subject, try to get the best angle and view. Make sure it is interesting, something that holds your eye and makes you want to come back to it. I've walked the same paths and locations many a time, and they are forever changing with the time of day, weather conditions and the seasons. If you think a shot would look better in early morning instead of evening, go in the morning. And have fun, if nothing else, at least you will get some exercise.
