Location
I was going to see what sort of wildlife was on Honeymoon Island in Florida. On my way there I noticed lots of egrets and great blue herons hanging out near fishermen. I walked over and this heron was begging for the fisherman to throw its catch over. The heron caught it and was flipping it around so it could easily swallow it. Snapping many shots this was one of themTime
The time of day was in the afternoon around 2:00 PM.Lighting
The lighting was ideal considering it was mostly cloudy. I’ve found photos on cloudy days or indirect lighting look better that on bright sunny days. There’s less contrast shadows and overexposure.Equipment
This was shot with my Canon 7D and a 400mm lens. No other equipment was necessary.Inspiration
I’ve always loved capturing the moment in my photos. Timing is essential to get this shot. I’ve watched how many birds catch and eat their food and thought that would be a great opportunity to captureEditing
I did do a bit of processing afterwards. Cropped out other fisherman and items on the ground above herons head and enhanced color a bit. Other that that it’s just as it was seenIn my camera bag
Most of my photos are taken with my Canon 7D and a 400mm lens with a polarizing filter. I also have a flash extra batteries and memory cards for camera. I also keep a small towel to set lens on for stability when needed.Feedback
Pay attention to the subject matter. Notice their behavior and how they respond to stimulation. Be patient be persistent and definitely be prepared to capture the moment. Take as many shots as possible and most likely you’ll get a good photo in that bunch. This photo was one of 120. I simply deleted the bad ones
