Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo of my son and his fiance' for an engagement shoot at the London Bridge here in Lake Havasu City, Arizona.

Time

My son and his fiance' wanted to include a image of the London Bridge for one of their engagment photos because it represents where they live. I didn't want to take the standard photo of them standing in front of the bridge like everyone else does. I have always loved the way the bridge looks at night so I came up with this concept becasuse I knew I wanted to catch their silhouettes as they kissed.

Lighting

I had my daughter-in-law hold an external flash with her left hand, set to the lowest setting, so it would illuminate the umbrella. I had another flash on the camera, again set to a low setting so I could illuminate them just a little. Before I shot I used a flash light on my subjects to set my focus manually. The umbrella I used was from my studio set up. If I were to do this again, I would try to find a bigger umbrella.

Equipment

I used a Canon T1i. Sigma 17-70, 2 Yongnuo Speedlites (YN560), Cowboy Studio flash sync, and a tripod.

Inspiration

As I mentioned earlier, my son wanted a photo of them near the London Bridge. I had seen an image done in a simular way on the Internet using an umbella to create a silhouette and I thought I'd like to try to try that.

Editing

Yes, I used photoshop to edit. Just did the standard adjustments. Levels, Brightness/Contrast, Saturation, Selective Color...etc.

In my camera bag

I have recentlly upgraded my CanonT1i for a T3i. My lenses are a 17-70 Sigma, Canon 50mm 1.8, and a Canon 55-250mm.

Feedback

My only advice is to experiment with your camera and flashes as much as possible. Look at others work for inspiration. I always try to plan ahead as much as I can, yet one needs to be flexible as well. The possiblities are endless. That's what I love the most about Photography. The sky's the limit.
