This photo was taken in Lincoln Nebraska in a very dark field at night. I was driving along and saw this amazing old tractor right under the stars. I couldn't pass the opportunity up!Time
It's about 10pm CDT here and thankfully a clear night. I also got lucky in that I had all of my gear with me from a previous shoot earlier that day.Lighting
The lighting was tricky! Getting the tractor and the stars was a challenge but thankfully it was a clear night and dark enough where the stars were clearly visible without the interference of too much llight pollution.Equipment
My trusty old tripod. My canon 50D and a Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 lens opened wide.Inspiration
For a long time now I've been looking for something like this. I've alwyas had this vision of a rusted old car under the stars but this was the next best thing! I tend to see certain romantic scenes in my head first and when I see something that has all the elements I go for it, often at my own risk. But that's what makes photography fun for me. It's almost like finding elusive treasure!Editing
Yes! For starters I had to get the stars in one exposure, then the tractor in another. In the field I used a flashlight to give the tractor a slight light painting. Using photoshop I blended the two images together to boldly display both the stars and the tractor in a single shot!In my camera bag
I just carry the basics. The stuff needed to do what I do. A wide angle lens, a 75-300 zoom lens, my Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8, the 50mm f/1.8 (nifty fifty) my two cameras, the canon 50D and my rebel t2i and a 10-stop ND filter.Feedback
Think about what kind of image you want before you even set up your equipment. What vibe are you going for? Once you know that what techniques are at your disposal to get what you want. Be patient and have fun, photography is a journey. Also, don't leave the site until you feel very confident that you have what you need in camera. Take as many shots as you can to make sure you have it perfect!
