One of the numerous vineyards in France. The country is not only famous for the art of cooking. With its wine cellars and vineyards stretching from North to South, the France produces every day table wines and the most prestigious bottles in the world like "Chateau Margaux", "Petrus", "Chateau Mouton Rothschild", Romanee Conti, Chambertin, etc. For the first time, Italy produced in 2010 more than five billion liters of wine and France only 4.5 billion but France took back the first position as the world’s leading wine producer in 2011. However, French wines produced in Burgundy’ vineyards are considered by many to be the best. According to a recent pricing database, more than 30 wines from Burgundy are among the 50 most expensive. These ones are an alternative investment in the same way as real estates, bonds or... a masterpiece on Fine Art America. Ten years ago, one bottle of Chateau d'Yquem (1787) fetched 100,000$ at auction. At the same period, one bottle of Saint-Emilion was sold at San Francisco for more than 135,000$ but these prices don't hold the record. In 1989 one Chateau Margaux 1787 which was from Thomas Jefferson, was sold a cool 225,000$. That bottle had a pitiful ending. The owner took the invaluable wine to a dinner at a restaurant but the waiter knocked the bottle over, breaking it. In 1985, the publisher Malcolm Forbes paid 160,000$ for a bottle of Château Lafite. Forbes thought the bottle was from Thomas Jefferson’s cellar but its authenticity has been contested. Anyway, what could we do with a more than two centuries old bottle of Bordeaux?
