Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken after what was about to be a day ending storm in Holland, MI. I was soaked to the bone, covered in sand and ready to pack it up for the day but then the storm finally started to let up. I was only able to make a few shots before it was dark.

Time

Waiting out the storm, in this case, definitely worked out. Even though I had set out to try and capture a typical West Michigan sunset (which are beautiful in their own right) I was able to capture something really special here. The storm moved in during my drive to the coast, I'm glad I continued with my plans.

Lighting

The light that broke its way through the storm was definitely special. West Michigan sunsets are generally really beautiful. This was something special though. The sky was much more orange than usual.

Equipment

This was shot with a Canon 7D, a sigma 24-70 f/2.8 and a tripod.

Inspiration

I have always been slightly obsessed with seascapes. They can be the epitome of peace. It just draws me in. Making photos like this is truly a form of meditation for me. Whenever my life seems to be taking me over, I need to get out and shoot scenes like this. It helps to clear my head and spend some time alone with nothing.

Editing

Most of my post is done in Lightroom. Its such a great tool. I usually end up Photoshop to remove anything that isn't adding to picture. I also like to use different layer styles to bring out some of the contrast in ways that you can't in Lightroom. Typically I will use soft light or overlay and play with the opacity to bring out the details that I want.

In my camera bag

I have since upgraded my camera body. I typically have my Canon 5d markIII, my Sigma 24-70 f/2.8, a Caonon 100mm f/2.8L and a 50mm f/1.8. I always have my travel tripod handy as well. This setup has pretty much done it for me. I try to carry as little as possible, especially whenever I have a long trek ahead of me.

Feedback

The best advice I can give is to be patient and be prepared. You never know when weather is going to change, for the better or worse. Keep shooting and never settle. Keep pushing everything you have learned in the past to try and create something new in the future. Landscapes can be tricky sometimes. But, perseverance is always key. You'll get it, don't worry.
