This photo was taken in my backyard off my deck railing. I feel so comfortable shooting in natural light and there's always the plus side of knowing how the light will fall during the day in my yard.Time
I wanted the sun to backlight the flower so I waited until later in the afternoon. The shade from the trees also helped to soften the photo.Lighting
When working with natural light you need to be able to move and adjust a lot because the sun is always moving. Of course I took a lot of photos to get the one perfect shot. I like to start out with an idea of what I want the image to be, but after a lot of shots and you're just not it getting it, you need to adjust your mindset.Equipment
My camera was the Nikon D7000, lens was Nikon VR Micro 105mm, f'2.8 IF-ED. I used a Bolt ring flash and Vanguard tripod. I put a yard of a light green material over the grass to even out the background.Inspiration
I definitely have a love of flowers and I'm always amazed at the beautiful detail inside the flowers. Macro opened my eyes to the tiny worlds that are existing around us and, of course, I love the challenge.Editing
I used the Nikon software to just tweak the color and light and Photoshop 10 to remove any blemishes on the petals. In my camera bag
That's a hard question to answer because every day is a different shoot. If I'm going to shoot action, I'll have my Nikon 750, 70-300mm lens with hood and polarizing filter, for a portrait shoot I'll have my Nikon D7000 with Nikon 50mm/1.4 lens and my Nikon 750 with Nikkor 24-70mm f2.8. For just visiting family and friends I always carry my Nikon 750 with the 50mm lens. An extra battery and memory card are always in my bagFeedback
Patience is so important with Macro shooting. You need to move your point of focus around to get an angle that you like. Be prepared to take a lot of photos. Experiment with different light choices. One of my favorites is to use small battery operated LED lights. Always, always use a tripod. When the large tripod won't work, I use a small Spyder tripod and brace it on my shoulder or a close hard surface.
