Behind The Lens
Location
At a girls softball field in a small Midwest town.Time
This was taken during the sunset hour which enhanced the colors, my favorite time to take photos.Lighting
The 2.8 aperture on my lens makes it my go to lens for low light shots. Plus I have learned to stay as close as possible to the field lighting.Equipment
I used my Nikon 750 and Nikon 80-200 lens. Because I like to have the freedom of moving around when I am shooting sports, I never use a tripod, it slows me down. It is important for every one to know that you don't use flash at sport events.Inspiration
I love shooting sports because the emotion tells a good story and I love the challenge of speed. I have this fun routine with my grand daughter that after the game and she is leaving the park, I am ready to keep shooting while she walks toward the lens. Having growing up and always having a lens pointed at her, she is a natural ! It has become a fun bonding momentEditing
I touched up her face a little, softened the photo a touch to get rid of any grain and added some contrast. In my camera bag
The lens I take with me depends on the event or situation, but I will usually add the Nikon Nifty 50 to my bag. Filters, hood, extra battery and memory card. There was a time when I would carry a lot of lens with me, but I have discovered that taking just one main lens makes you learn what that lens can do and helps you learn to be creative.Feedback
If you are new to shooting sports, take the time and study the action and players. Shoot on manual and learn how to adjust your speed and light settings. I like to move around and get different angles, tell a story. Never, ever shoot with flash at a sporting event, that can affect the players. I have seen people removed from a event because of shooting with the flash on.
