Location
I was at the zoo and all three lions were outside. This guy just woke up and was mesmerized by something he saw.Time
It was in early afternoon around 2:00 p.m. It was spring and the lighting is still good because the air is not as heavy with humidity as it normally is.Lighting
I framed this to capture the lion's piercing gaze and the yellow of his eyes. He sat there for approximately five minutes starting intently at something in the distance and his piercing gaze and the set of his mane and mouth perfectly fit the king of the jungle.Equipment
I used my Sony camera with a 70-200 lens. I did not use a tripod.Inspiration
I love lions and this guy just captured my attention quickly because he is a magnificent specimen. The piercing gaze of his eyes along with stature really personified the "king of the jungle." He was beautiful and deadly at the same time.Editing
In this shot, I upped the contrast a bit. It was such a good shot of him that not much was needed to capture the beauty. In my camera bag
The first thing that is always in my bag (aside from four extra batteries), is my Sony G lens. It is a 70-240 and the bokeh and color of this lens is superb. My other favorites are also Sony lenses 24-70 and 18-105; these are the lenses I use the most.Feedback
Being in the South, the humidity affects the lighting in shots especially in the summer. But in Spring and Fall the air is less heavy and the lighting can be really good. For me, I find just being aware of my surroundings has made my photography better because look and see things as if I was taking a photo. That has led to some really unexpected and good shots.
