Location
I took this photo in an abandoned customs office in Vienna. I was notified by one of my friends that there's a gallery from a few artists in the lower floors of the building, so I grabbed my camera gear and we decided to jump over the barrier to access the uppermost floors instead. A bit of urban exploration, kind of.Time
I got pretty late by the time I arrived at this spot and I was lucky enough for some remaining ambient light to shine through the doorways to create an interesting pattern on the floor of the hallway!Lighting
I really wanted to emphasize the warm light in the elevator room at the end of the hallway and create a moody look, so I picked a slow shutter speed. I couldn't go much lower than 1/10th of a second because I wasn't smart enough to bring the tripod with me... handheld had to do the trick!Equipment
This was shot using my rather new Canon 5D Mark III with a Canon 17-40mm f/4L lens, the tripod I used was my left leg, with the camera positioned on my knee. Planning ahead, right?Inspiration
I've always been fascinated by all those urban exploration photos I see on the internet, this was my first shot at it. I have another photo of that location on my profile too, it's called "13th Floor"! Since then I have been hooked with the "genre" and visited some very interesting places in multiple parts of Austria.Editing
There was quite some post-processing involved, mostly color correction due to light of different color temperature (ambient light lighting up the hallway, fluorescent lights lighting the room at the end). I also removed a quite distracting ceiling light (turned off) in the hallway, light from all directions reflected off of it. If you want to see it, here's the original: http://www.lukas-berger.com/uploads/GP7B9598.jpgIn my camera bag
I always have my Walimex 14mm f/2.8 (also known as Samyang or Rokinon), Canon 17-40mm f/4L and Sigma 85mm f/1.4 with me. I only bring my Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 when I know that I'll need it. Since it's so small, I also have my second tripod in my bag all the time, it's a Rollei Compact Traveller No. 1. Other than that, I carry a small 500GB external HDD and my laptop (Surface Book).Feedback
Be adventurous, roam your neighborhood for abandoned buildings or ask around if someone knows one. Safety first though, you sure don't want to get hurt with nobody around. Don't go alone, share the experience!
