I love Cardinals! Their color intensifies during the winter months to a bright red. Some people believe them to by a symbol of Grace and fore bearer of good tidings. The ultimate picture I dreamed of was to catch one during a snowstorm where that red color would POP off the background.Editing
Just a little cropping, a slight sharpening and color adjustment to get him looking as he really is and open up the dark areas of his face. Shooting dark against snow can be a challenge. In my camera bag
In addition to my 7D and 70-200, I always have my super sharp Tokina 11-16 f-2.8 for extreme wide angle landscapes and a Tamron 17-50 f-2.8 I also keep a small assortment of ND and polarizer filters handy. I make good use of an inexpensive wireless remote and a back up wire shutter release for insurance.Feedback
Yes! PATIENCE PAYS OFF. Cardinals are skittish and very aware of their surroundings. I keep seed year round and often just stand nearby to let them get used to my presence. Do not look at them directly as that is a threat. In this case, I wore a light colored pullover and hat to blend in with the snow. Put the camera up to your face and approach very slowly. Pause if he looks at you and get closer as he looks away. If he leaves, that's ok... stay still as he may return as this one did. I would also take your DSLR off viewfinder and use the screen as it is quieter. Good Luck! ( Thanks VB for considering me for your feature! )
