I took this picture on the steps leading down from Palisade Avenue to the Spuyten Duyvil Metro-North Station in Riverdale, the Bronx, NY.Time
I was heading into work in Manhattan early on a Winter morning. It was quiet on the streets and on the steps. It was a peaceful ten-minute walk from my apartment to the train station on the Hudson.Lighting
The light was exactly as it looks in the photo. It was a foggy morning and the streetlamps along the steps were still on. I noticed the light and lines of the stairs and had to stop and take the picture. I don’t remember if stopping made me miss my train. If it did, it was worth it. I love this photo.Equipment
On a phone camera. I am pretty sure it was an iPhone (but it could have been my old BlackBerry). It was January 2014.Inspiration
It was early in the morning as I headed down the stairs towards the train station. The streetlamps along the steps were still on. I noticed the light and the fog and the lines of the streetlamps and stairs and had to stop and take the picture. I don’t remember if stopping made me miss my train. If it did, it was worth it. Just keep your eyes open and don’t move too quickly through life. When I walk down the street without my eyes glued to my phone screen, I notice lines and shapes and colors and shadows and clouds, sunrise and sunset. Somehow an image comes into sharp focus and I need to capture it. Those moments make me so happy.
