This photo was taken in New Jersey in April of 2014.Time
This was shot in the late afternoon around 4. I had already been swimming for over an hour and the waves were still cranking.Lighting
I got lucky with the lighting on this one. It was mostly overcast this day but as the sun started to set it started peaking through the clouds. It gave some nice golden lighting on this wave as it crested.Equipment
I believe this was shot on a canon 60d with a 50mm lens in a liquid eye water housing. I no longer have the 60d I now shoot with a 5d Mark iii in an essex water housing with lenses ranging from 16-35m to 135mm.Inspiration
I had swam out this day trying to link up with my friends surfing and get a couple shots of them getting barreled. This wave happened to come through when I was in the perfect spot. If you look close you can see someone's surfboard and foot right where the lip is about to land.Editing
This shot was only basic post processing just some lighting, contrast and color adjustments to bring out some more detail in the wave.In my camera bag
I have a ton of equipment for water and landscapes. To shoot in the water I have my Essex water housing to fit my 5d Mark III with either my 50mm F/1.4, my 16-35 F/4 or my 135mm F/2. From land I usually use my 100-400 zoom or try to get some aerial shots with my mavic air.Feedback
My best advice would be to swim often and be comfortable in the ocean. When the waves get bigger the ocean can be a very dangerous place if you are not experienced. Once you nail the swimming part, just start experimenting with shooting. You will usually want a shutter of at least 1/500 or more to freeze waves in place while keeping the camera as steady as possible. Shooting surf photos ends up to be a lot of trial and error before you get a real handle on it.
