Location
My partner Susan and I spent a great weekend in Provincetown, Massachusetts just to get away from it all. We stayed in Truro, Massachusetts and decided one morning to take a ride to check out the Cape Cod Highland Light.Time
It was pretty early in the morning, and it wasn't the best opportunity for taking a photo. The sky was pretty uninteresting.Lighting
It was pretty overcast. I took some photos, and I wasn't pleased with many of them. Nevertheless, I kept at it.Equipment
I used my Canon EOS Rebel T3i.Inspiration
I love lighthouses, and we took the tour and climbed to the top. The story behind this lighthouse is pretty amazing. It was in danger of falling into the ocean due to erosion, so they actually moved it back from the edge of the cliff.Editing
At the end of the day, I replaced the entire sky on this one photo. However, I wanted it to look "ominous" because it was an overcast day and I knew an ominous aura would be so much more dramatic. In my camera bag
I carry two cameras, my Canon and then an Olympus. That way I can avoid having to switch lenses for multiple shots. I also carry a fisheye lens.Feedback
Generally speaking, I'm not the kind of person who does a lot of post-processing. However, I have to admit that I've changed my attitude towards that over the past couple of years. My recommendation when shooting something like a lighthouse is to take it from as many angles as possible. Shoot the entire thing, then shoot sections of it. I also took some great shots of just the light tower. For this contest, however, I decided that the whole shot was the best because of the ominous nature of the shot.
