Great photo, could you please tell me how to get the light beam to show up in the picture?

thanks Kevin, sure... we use a very strong LED flashlight... My brother almost didn't move for the 30sec exposure. I use a speedlite @ 1/2 to get him sharp in the image and to iluminate the foreground.

I think this is a very creative photograph. I like the flashlight sending photons back to where they came from.

Location
The picture was taken in Biological Reserve Lomas Barbudal in Costa Rica. This is a wonderful place to see birds, monkeys, insects and many other animals. In fact we saw one or two coyotes getting very close when we were taking the picture :D I really love this place.Time
Late... about 3am. My brother and I were concerned about the weather because at afternoon was raining a lot. At 11pm we walk to the place we chose for the picture and was very cloudy, we waited and waited(I have to said that was a nice brothers quality time, I see my brother just a few days in the year). We almost gave up but at 2:30am the clouds began to move and the sky was nice and clear after a few minutes. We were lucky!Lighting
In this specific picture I use a speedlite at 1/1 to gave some light to the foreground. Each picture were 30sec exposure. I just fire it up at any time in those 30secs.Equipment
Nikon D800, Tokina 16-28mm f2.8, Vanguard tripod, Ball head, L bracket, A Nikon speedlite.Inspiration
Since I was a child I have loved the space, the stars and everything related to astronomy. I'm a commercial product studio photographer not an astrophotographer but when I see pictures of really good astrophographers I think: hey! You can do it too! (at least try :D) Here in Costa Rica is very difficult to find places without light pollution so, you need to take it and try to transform it in something you can take advantage in your pictures. We can not change our context but we can change the way we shoot to get really wonderful pictures.Editing
In this picture yes, I did some lens correction and minor adjustments in lightroom then I exported the pictures to a panorama software and finish the process in Photoshop, some located adjustments. In my camera bag
My Nikon D800, a Tokina 16-28, Tamron 70-200, 24-70 and a macro 90mm. ND Filters, Polarize filters, speedlites, remote wireless shutter, A shutter timer, triggers...Feedback
You need to carry in your bag an additional element: Patience. Most of the time things happen in a different way that you planned... so, be a chameleon and change your color in order to get in harmony to the context. And enjoy it! Now just a few technical stuff... Use rule 500 to get the right exposure time before the earth rotation be evident in the picture. Get a wide angle lens, low f values, high ISO(but not to much)between 1600 and 5000 is ok depending on the place you are. Of course, a very good hard tripod. Apps like Starwalk, Google skymap and Stellarium would help a lot.
