Location
I took this photo at Kinderdijk in The Netherlands. This is what the Dutch are famous for, and since I'm Dutch, but living in Italy, I was very keen to get a few good shots while I was there in June 2014. In this location there are around 16 wind mills which make for a beautiful settingTime
I went there short before sunset, which was quite late in June, but the light is so much warmer. The good thing was that it was during a World Cup match of The Netherlands, so there were very few people around. Fortunately there was also very little wind, so that made for the nice reflection of the windmill in the canal.Lighting
Lighing is of course very important in a landscape photo, if not in all photographs. That was the first reason to go here at sunset. The sky was not really clear, but I love the end result. I had hoped for some clouds, but that means I have to come back another time.Equipment
I used a Canon EOS450D with a 15-85 mm lens and a polarizer with a tripod, so I didn't have to worry about shutter times. (21mm at f/13 and 1/25 sec)Inspiration
Most of my photography is made during travels, so there's photos from Africa to America or closer to home in Italy, but photos from Holland were really missing. Being Dutch that's not a good thing, especially since The Neherlands have beautiful places, like Kinderdijk. I wanted to show the multiple windmills, with a reflection in a warm light, and I believe I have succeeded ;-)Editing
This photo was processed in LR5 for white balance, local exposure adjustments and sharpness. The final result is warmer than the RAW file and the light in the reed on the foreground have been evidenced. I've added a few gradual filters to 'close' the image and attract the attention to the first windmill. In my camera bag
I used my Canon EOS 450D with my 15-85mm with usually has a polarizer on. I've now upgraded to the 6D with a 24-105mm F/4, so image quality will improve. Depending on the situations I carry a tripod and a ND filter, and I have a 75-300mm for safaris, but unfortunately it's not stabilized. So I try to travel light, but over the years it's getting a ittle heavier, but not too much.Feedback
Shoot even if the light is not perfect and the weather is maybe not what you were hoping for. The sky can be amazing in the Netherlands with all the clouds and the wind, but as you see even with a calm cloudless sky, you can still get great results. Bring a tripod as this comes very handy in low light ;-)
