Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on the east shore of Kauai during my honeymoon.

Time

This is a 6 am sunrise in August and we are looking east north-east. We got up and watched the sunrise from multiple points on the island during our honeymoon but I think this was the best one.

Lighting

This lighting was as good as it was going to be. We just played with its own natural element.

Equipment

This was shot with a Canon 5D MkIII with a EF 16-35mm F2.8 and a Yongnuo release. I took a cheap wobbly tripod to Kauai with us because I didn't want to haul a heavier tripod around, I almost paid the price when a wave almost took out the tripod. It was also annoying having to take my black rapid anchor point off the camera to screw it onto the ball head (no plate) but since then I've got a Manfrotto befree and I highly recommend it. They make blackrapid anchor point attachments for Manfrotto RC2 plates.

Inspiration

We really wanted photos of us having fun in the sun and memories to keep with us forever.

Editing

This photo was processed from RAW and I use lightroom for editing. The most predominant feature of the edit is the digital grad filter which I used to darken the sky. Other then that just some colour, contrast and sharpening.

In my camera bag

I carry a Domke F2 mostly unless I am out back packing and in it I have my 5D MkIII with a 24-70 F2.8 attached and then a 16-35 F2.8, 70-200 F2.8 + 2.0 and a 50 F1.2. I have C-pols and step rings, a blackrapid strap, single flash, and remote.

Feedback

Plan it out and know where the sun is going to be. Use a website that will calculate the sun position on that day and tell you when sunrise is and what direction it will be in. Show up a half hour early and bring a headlamp. Look around ... a lot of people just look at the sun but there will be a lot of interesting things behind you and they will be in fantastic light. Shoot wide and then shoot narrow ... be creative.
