Behind The Lens

Location

This picture was shot in the Edison Hotel in New York City.

Time

This image was taken around mid day, early afternoon. The building allowed the direct sunlight to bounce around a bit, so it wasn't coming in directly through the window. Light was also further diffused through the curtain which provided that soft glow.

Lighting

What I wanted to portray in this shot is the happiness that they booth have to each other. It's very natural, and heartfelt. They are having fun and laughing together.

Equipment

This was shot on a Nikon D7000 and a Nikkor 70-200mm f/ 2.8 VR II. No flash. No tripod.

Inspiration

The motivation behind taking such a photo was to be able to give someone the pictures they deserved. I put a back story to the couple as I was shooting. The Groom (Military) would be leaving for war shortly and these are his last photos with his new bridge before he gets deployed. So...in my mind there was a lot of significance to it. I kept telling myself, I need to give them a good picture for them to remember what it feels like to be happy.

Editing

I just did a basic color edit and balance. Increased the contrast from straight out of camera.

In my camera bag

Well that depends... Daily Bag: Nikon D7000 Nikkor 24-70 f/2.8 Nikkor 70-200 f/2.8 VR II Lens Cloth Pro Bag: 2x Nikon D7000 Nikkor 24-70 f/2.8 Nikkor 70-200 f/2.8 VR II Nikkor 105mm f/2 MACRO Nikkor 28-120mm f/3.5-5.6 SB900 Speedlight Oben Tripod Misc Equipement (Lens Cloths, extra batteries, light modifiers, etc.)

Feedback

The best way to capture something like this in my opinion is to be ready when they are not. It provides more of a natural feeling. There's no pressure. Pictures like this can be difficult because the subjects usually don't know how to pose or are just clueless. But...if you are prepared to take the shot when they least expect it, the probability is that you will have a better chance and collecting natural reactions rather than posed one.
