This photo was taken in my front yard in Durham NC USA. I caught this little girl on the way to our feeders. They are very curious creatures and aren't afraid to get close this one was no more than 8-10 feet away from me.Time
I got this one around lunch time. I was working from home and took a few minutes to grab some shots and see what I could get.Lighting
I believe that for a good bird shot hard light is best. I tend to take my bird shots during the hours where I will have some good hard (harsh) light. I will say the golden hour does make for a great shot as well but the details just seem a bit softer to my eyesEquipment
I used my Nikon D7100 with the "kit" 55-200 VR lens. I got this one handheld because it's near impossible to get the fast moving buggers from a tripod mount. It was shot with only natural light.Inspiration
I have always loved the way the humming bird moves I wanted to challenge myself to try to capture the beauty of their movement in a still shot. I kept my shutter speed slower than I normally would so I could capture some of the movement in the wings.Editing
Nothing special was done for post processing on this shot. I did crop this one a bit and added the normal level adjustments for a RAW file like black and white points, a bit of sharpening, and a small amount of noise reduction.In my camera bag
When shooting wild life I will always have my trusty Nikon D7100 with my Nikon 55-200mm VR and my Tamron 200-500mm lens. In general I shoot natural light except for my macro work. For macro work my Tokina 100mm macro lens never leaves the D7100.Feedback
To capture a humming bird in flight takes lots of patience. Take lots of shots and be prepared to delete more shots than you normally might. I find hand held works far better than a tripod for capturing these fast moving little beauties.
