Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at Shiromine-ji Temple, Kagawa, Japan.

Time

In Japan we enjoy seeing the colored leaves in autumn. I took a camera and went to the temple, which was one of the most famous places for the colored leaves. It was in the middle of the mountains and there was little sunlight early in the morning or late in the evening. So I took this photo late in the morning; at 10:20 on November 27.

Lighting

When I looked at a fence which surrounded one of the buildings, I saw a garden through the fence. There were many red maple leaves on the ground covered with moss. More interestingly, the striped shadows of the fence created the contrast of the color and the great effect on the composition of the view. I directed the lens and pressed the shutter button.

Equipment

This was shot on a Pentax K10D with a Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4.

Inspiration

I tried to shoot photos full of vivid red and yellow colors of autumn leaves against blue sky (indeed I did later), but when I glanced at the view I felt Wabi-Sabi strongly partly because of the atmosphere at the temple. Though only the red fallen leaves on the moss were beautiful, the scene in which some sun-lighted parts were contrasted with the shadow was aesthetic.

Editing

I used to think that the better photos, the less post processing. So I only enhanced the color red by Photoshop. Now I want to strengthen the contrast and enhance the color green.

In my camera bag

Now I use a Pentax K-5 with a Pentax 18-135mm mainly. I take a Pentax 55-300mm, a Pentax FA43mmF1.9, and a Tamron SP AF90mmF2.8 in my bag.

Feedback

When we shoot colored leaves against clear sky, we usually have beautiful photos. Some of them can be postcards, but that's all. Of course I shoot them, and besides I try to look for scenes behind the stages-where something that conveys its atmosphere not directly but allusively. Sometimes I come upon the luck.
