Behind The Lens
Location
Venice, Italy. While celebrating 30 years of marriage and as a birthday present my wife and I traveled to Venice and then sailed down the Croatian Coast to the Greek islands.Time
Mid afternoon proved to be better light than the evenings when there was too much glare.Lighting
The afternoon was slightly cloudy and the natural light was more than adequate.Equipment
I used a Nikon D5100 camera with a Nikkor 55 - 300 mm zoom lens as we went past a large billboard sign on the boat that travels on the Grand Canal. I hand held the camera and no other equipment was used.Inspiration
The commercial sign was not too interesting, but the Italian flag colors on the lips appealed to the whimsy in me. We went by the sign several times and the more I looked at the lips the more I liked the image.Editing
I zoomed in on the lips and cropped them from the main image. I shot the image several times as we sailed by on the boat and chose the best one.In my camera bag
I travel light and bring along an extra battery and charger as well as the camera and lens mentioned. I use a number of SanDisk Extreme memory chips at 32 and 64 GB.Feedback
When traveling I shoot on average 250 - 300 images a day and would advise others to not be hesitant in taking pictures as you don't want to miss that one great shot. In the evening I review what I have taken and remove those images that are not good to free up space on the memory chip. I always have additional memory chips in my pocket in case one suddenly gets filled up. The Boy Scout motto to always be prepared is a good one to follow.
