Outstanding luck at capturing a rainbow and lightning in the same shot.

Behind The Lens

Location

I took this shot out of my back door one evening during the Arizona monsoons one year.

Time

This was taken in the evening after we had a huge rainstorm pass over, I was looking west capturing the sunset which was spectacular and I turned to the east......WOW. The color, clouds and the double rainbow was breath taking. As I snapped the shot lightning hit down the road from my house.

Lighting

Natural light in drizzling rain, I don't use lighting at all unless I need a standard flash. I am self taught so extra equipment such as lighting are strange to me.

Equipment

This was taken with my old stand-by the FujiFilm FinePix S4400, hand held. I usually have to use a tri-pod now because I shake but this shot I was able get it. The S4400 is a great camera for beginners, the settings are pretty easy to understand and all the shots look great, unless like this day there was mist/fog/drizzle in the air then it all looks a little fuzzy.

Inspiration

My favorite things to get pictures of are clouds, storms, rainbows, landscapes...taking shots of brilliant sunsets is a particular favorite. Luck was the major key here, all I was looking at was the colors in the clouds and the double rainbow.... the lightning was an added bonus.

Editing

I did use On1 to enhance the detail of the clouds and to bring out the second rainbow.

In my camera bag

I have two cameras that I use most of the time. The Fujifilm FinePix S4400 and the X-E2 camera with either the 50-80 lens or the 50-200 lens. Both are great cameras and do everything I need as a casual photographer.

Feedback

In Arizona our most spectacular time of the year is during the monsoons, if you are looking for color that pops, drama and pure AWE then wait until the monsoon season hits. Now Arizona has a wide variety of landscapes that don't need the extra push from monsoons but in my area that is basically all we have. Timing, patience and luck are a photographers best friends when living in the desert southwest.
