Designed by Sir Frederick Gibberd for Northumbrian Water, construction of the Reservoir started in 1975 as a joint venture between AMEC & Balfour Beatty and completed in 1981. Kielder Water is the largest artificial lake in the United Kingdom by capacity which is surrounder by Kielder Forest which is the largest man made forest in Europe. It took over Two years for the reservoir to fill up and was opened by Queen Elizabeth II in 1982
