This was an experimental shot, my first time shooting directly into the sun using a natural density filter. The great thing about water is that you get two types of light, natural light and reflected light.Equipment
Camera: Canon EOS 600D, Aperture f22, Exposure 1/200, ISO 100, ND8 Filter and Focal Length 18mmInspiration
This beach is always deserted, it is very difficult to get to. There is only one track that leads to it and you can either walk in or ride a mountain bike for over an hour through dense bush to get to it. You could of course get there by boat too. I live on the east coast, sunsets are not usually visible. I used a photographers ephemeris app to locate the best vantage point to view a sunset and I came up with this location.Editing
HDR soft filtering applied in post-processing to bring out the texture of the clouds. It is such an improvement from the RAW shot. I love this technique, a subtle touch of HDR can really make a photo pop!In my camera bag
I carry a backpack. I have two entry level bodies Canon EOS 1100D & EOS 600D. Three cheaper type lenses: a Canon kit lens 18-55mm, Canon Zoom Lens 70-200mm and a portrait prime lens Canon 85mm 1:1.8. I have a packet of cheap ND filters 2-8, a central polarizing filter and each lens has a UV filter mainly for scratch protection. I have a Speedlite from Yongnuo YN560-II, a remote trigger, spare batteries and I always carry an entry level aluminium tripod.Feedback
This shot was completely planned, from deciding on the location, timing the route to get there and which equipment to take. A well planned shot can net a great result.
