The Isles of Shoals are small rocky outcroppings in the ocean just off the coast of New Hampshire and Maine. The northern islands are within Maine, the southern within New Hampshire. They may have been a stopping point for Portugese fishermen who roamed the North Atlantic in search of cod, even before the time of Columbus.During the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, some of the islands were fashionable get a ways for artists and wealthy northern New Englanders. During the summer, they still host scientists and their research assistants from local colleges.
