Location

This photo is actually a mix of three shots. The tree was photographed on an ancient Hawaiian battlefield that I walked past every morning around 8.

Lighting

The strong early sunlight brought out some details in the tree that would not show well in actual moonlight.

Equipment

The camera was a Panasonic Lumix ZS DMZ 40 using the automatic setting.

Inspiration

Somehow the dead tree on a battlefield steeped in Hawaiian history, where the soldiers of Hamamaha were still buried, struck a chord. It took me a long time to come up with a combination that showed the tree in a way that echoed that feeling.

Editing

This photo is actually a mix of three shots combined in Photoshop.

In my camera bag

On this day, I had just my pocket camera that I take walking.

Feedback

Look for a good tree outline against the sky or at least a background without too many distractions. If it turns out well, transfer to a background that does not distract.
