This photo was taken in Halifax Public Gardens, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. A 16-acres oasis in the heart of the city of Halifax. I like to improve my abilities about photography so any chance I can get to try something new, I give it a shot. Nature, landscape, spur of the moment pictures are my favorite types. I also enjoy, at times, adding toys in my photos.Time
I was walking the Gardens, around mid-morning under a sunny sky, to see what kind of flowers would get my attention. There was an area dedicated to dahlias and started taking pictures of the variety available. Of the different dahlia pictures I took, this was my favorite one and still is to this day.Lighting
The sun was facing me but not to the point of making the photo washed out. It actually gave the flower that special glow you see around it. Natural light can add a special effect on your subject.Equipment
This was shot with a Canon T4i with an 18-135mm lens, I think it was at F/5, using AV, and manual focus. The camera was handheld. No other equipment was used.Inspiration
The Gardens had a variety of dahlias growing in a dedicated area. I liked the fact that, that flower was so well rounded, that the petals curled and looked like little hearts. I wanted this dahlia to stand out. So, I stood a couple of feet away, used a shallow depth of field to have the blurry background effect, composed it, and snapped the picture.Editing
I did a bit of cropping to center the flower and gave the colors a bit of a touch up to make the colors stand out more.In my camera bag
Besides my Canon T4i with its' 18-135mm lens, I carry a 75-200 mm lens , a cable release, extra charged batteries, a neutral density lens, a lens cleaning cloth, plastic bag (in case of rain), a note book with hints for doing certain photos, and my battery charger. I also have room for a tripod which can be tucked on the side. Other than what's in my bag, I also keep a knee cushion pad for those close to the ground shots and a a large light reflector in my vehicle.Feedback
Flower gardens are an interesting place to photograph not only flowers but also its various sceneries that can developed. Just need to walk about, sit for a while, and watch what happens. Let your feeling guide you. Also do not be afraid of taking pictures in various lighting conditions. I like to break the rules and see what results I can achieve. Be patient as sometime you have to wait for the area you want to photograph to be clear of other distractions, i.e. like people walking in your field of view.
