Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at my parent's house in rural North Dakota. It was our very first winter in North Dakota and I found everything about it to be beautiful. It certainly wasn't the first time I had experienced winter, but it was so different than the grey, cloudy Michigan winter's I was accustomed to.

Time

The image was taken around midmorning. It was incredibly cold that day, so the hoar frost hung around on the branches well past sunrise.

Lighting

The lighting is natural. I think something that makes this image strong in terms of lighting and effects of lighting is the shadows. If the shadows were not there, especially in the foreground from the tire tracks it would be lacking.

Equipment

This image was shot on a Nikon D80.

Inspiration

There wasn't a cloud in the sky, the tree branches were white, and the red building contrasted perfectly against nature. I thought it would look beautiful to be captured as a photo.

Editing

At the time, I was a self-taught photographer strongly against post-processing. I think my aversion to it was because I didn't know how to use the programs. Now, several years down the road I am studying photography in college and have learned how to edit images in both Photoshop and Lightroom. I don't think I would change a thing about this image, though. So many people have told me they love it and that I shouldn't change a thing about it.

In my camera bag

Normally I have a Nikon D3300, 18-55 mm lens, and a 55-200mm lens. I also try to keep a Fujifilm FinePix XP80 waterproof point and shoot camera and a Pentax 35mm film camera with me.

Feedback

Take a lot of photos. I'm snapping photos of just about everything when I'm looking to expand my portfolio. Remember that not every photo is going to be a masterpiece. Even when I look through all the images I have uploaded to ViewBug, I sometimes wonder what I was thinking when I thought that would be a fabulous photo to show the world. Look for something you think will be beautiful because photography is about showing how you see the world.
