Behind The Lens

Location

I was staying at Mekong Floating House on Turtle Island, and we were completely cut off, reliant on the owner to call a ferry, so for the couple of days we were there we explored the tiny island, Con Quy, Vietnam.

Time

Having woken up quite early when the traffic on the river started again, I wandered off along the coast of the island in case anything interesting caught my eyes.

Lighting

In the middle of nowhere, the only light I used was natural...and thankfully as it was quite early the light hadn't become too harsh.

Equipment

I was using my Nikon D7100 which was quite new, so I hadn't used too much. I had one of the lenses which came with the outfit 55/300, with f16.

Inspiration

There was so much happening on the Mekong, that there was masses to see. Having moved away from the main river into a slower moving part of the river I spotted two men in the water, and wasn't sure what they were doing. Eventually I could see them clearly enough to realise they were fishing with nets, hand thrown, and catching prawns. I watched as they came closer and moved myself to a location I knew they would come past. I took quite a few photos as they worked, and eventually when they came past they stopped and one lad held up the prawn and smiled..I got that shot! As we had no common language I smiled and took a few more pictures, and the lads continued on their way, catching more prawns as they went.

Editing

maybe just a brightening, but using what my Mac had in the photos app.

In my camera bag

Usually camera Nikon D7100, and 2 lenses - 55-300 and 18-105 ...occasionally I take a tripod, but usually use walls etc around me.

Feedback

Try and work out where your subject is heading and try and be there for them...I was lucky that they were coming towards me as I couldn't have got further up the island if they were going the other way....just be ready and take a lot of photos!! Have fun as well :)
