Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at St-Charles Cimetary in Quebec City. I found this little angel on a gravestone.

Time

I took the shot at 10:48 am.

Lighting

It was a sunny end of september day . I wanted to take a shot with a studio feeling style , so i decided to put priority on the statue charm and forget about the background. I use the natural shadows produced by the trees around. The sunrays just kissed the wings edges and lightened the body in a gently way. i put my ISO at 100 to avoid noise in the wanted to be dark background .I shot at 1/2000sec to catch te light from the statue only. I made a little exposure correction -0.3steps. My aperture was F/5.6. I took a lot of shots at different settings to achieve this one.

Equipment

I use a Canon EOS 7D and a Canon Zoom lens EF 70-200mm 1:2.8L IS USM. No flash or tripod here.

Inspiration

I love the concept of angels in spirituality and in art. My goal was to take a picture of an adult size angel to show strenght and softness. When i saw this little one to honor a child's death, i was very touched and i did my project on that statue only. This statue was imperfect with dirt and cracks from time and climatic rigours. It was the perfect subject representing softness, strenght, sadness, death, survival and memories. I treated it with respect.

Editing

My background was almost perfectly black. I just had to adjust dark tones a little.

In my camera bag

I have normally an external flash, a spare battery and card, a 2 or 1.4 x adaptor, a protector plastic jacket for camera and lens and a cleaning lens pencil. When i go for a photo session, i choose the lens wich better suits my project because my bag is not big enough to carry extra lenses. In this case, i choose the versatil 70-200mm to make a good portrait.

Feedback

I don't consider myself to be an expert but i should say that falling in love with your subject is a good way to start .This way, you will consider all options t to make it the best you can...trying several angles and camera settings until you'll be satisfied. Consider that too much post-processing is not always a good idea . Learn more about your camera possibilities and do almost all the job on the field.
