Location
Believe it or not, this image was taken in a run of the mill apartment complex in the middle of Everywhere, Surburbia. Fortunately for me and the timing of this photo, it was not far from my house. To the left of this frame is a highway and power lines. To the right of this frame are the back of the apartment buildings, kids toys, and other day to day stuff. I use this image a lot as a way of explaining that there is beautify and awesomeness everywhere, you just have to open your eyes and pay attention.Time
Sunset. :)Lighting
I had actually been eyeballing this location for quite a while. The dandelions were just everywhere, and they looked amazing. However, the light just kept not being right. Then, one day, I am on the phone with a family member, glance over at this location, and BAAAM! The light was perfect. I hang up the phone, rush to get my camera, and sprint to get over to the location before anything changed.Equipment
Handheld, Canon 5D2, 70-200 F2.8 IS.Inspiration
The location. Whenever I would walk by it, I knew there was something there, something awesome, something waiting to be revealed. It wasn't until the light showed up that everything clicked.Editing
This is actually an HDR shot, though I wanted to stay away from the traditional HDR look. The dynamic range in the location was too much to take in a single frame. I've added a bit of saturation and deepened the blacks, but besides that, this was the scene that day!In my camera bag
Well, by trade, I am a wedding and commercial photographer, so my bag changes quite a bit. I shoot on Canon 5D3s, an assortment of prime and L lenses, off camera flash, and anything else you might think of. I'm kind of a gear junkie.Feedback
Patience. Wait until the scene is right. Don't rush photographs like this, you'll get a mediocre version of the image in your head. Also, be prepared. Always have your camera nearby, ready to rock. You never know when you will be walking by a location and your eye will be drawn to a particular place. Be ready to create. Also, most importantly, trust your instinct. If something about a location is "speaking" to you, try to understand why. Pause, reflect on what makes that scene so unique and powerful. Then, when the time is right, nail the photograph. :)
