Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was actually taken in my basement on a whim. We cut up a shirt for the headband and tied a blanket around him for the cape! We gave Ethan (my son) complete creative input on the outfit. :)

Time

To be honest, I don't remember. This shot was done inside with strobes. :)

Lighting

Lighting was relatively simple. There's a softbox camera left about 4 feet away from my son. On the floor aimed at the background is a gelled light. Probably about 4 feet from subject to wall.

Equipment

Just my Canon 5DMark III, two lights, a Canon L Lens, and there you go. I like to keep things simple. )

Inspiration

The image is my son and he's autistic. My wife and I got the idea from seeing some materials for the Light It Up Blue campaign from Autism Speaks. Of course, we put our spin on it. We are definitely superhero aficionados. Also, one of my biggest worries as a new parent was to have a developmentally challenged child. I can honestly say that my boy has taught me more about myself and life than I ever thought possible. He's not challenged, he's better. His mind is absolutely fascinating.

Editing

Very minimal. Some saturation adjustments, color, contrast, cropping. Slight texture.

In my camera bag

I am an environmental shooter mostly. Having a background in wedding photography, I'm used to making awesomeness with whatever I have on hand. So, I need the contents of my bag to be super flexible. In my bag, are two Mark IIIs, L Lenses from 17mm to 200mm including a macro lens and flashes. I always have 3 to 4 flashes with me with triggers, gels, and one light stand.

Feedback

This shot is not overly complicated from a technical standpoint. It's the idea and subject matter that make the shot. Also, having that connection with your subject to draw out a REAL expression. You cannot fake that. You cannot photoshop it. You have to build a rapport with who you are shooting. In this case, it was my easy. He's my son and he loves Superheroes. We had a blast!
